PROJECTS IN MELBOURNE

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY BEN WRIGLEY

The architect converted the warehouse shell into a hardworking home that doubles as a showroom.

Furnishings, fixtures and fittings are particularly sympathetic to the owners interior style.

Materials, colours and finishes were chosen to enhance the strong feeling of design refinement and to provide an appropriate background to the objects on display.

Knoll occassional tables blend effortlessly with the carrara marble benchtops, while the decorative glass panels used to screen the different spaces, work well with the fine examples of decorative arts on display.

The classic design problems of
1) "How to bring natural light? " into the centre of the apartment faced the architect; and
2) "How to accommodate 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and ample storage space"
without losing the open warehouse feel of the existing shell.

The challenge was resolved thorugh the extensive use of 'slumped glass' decorative panels, fitted between selected internal walls and the ceiling. These translucent panels filter sunlight from the giant industrial-scale windows at each end into the central core of the apartment.

Space saving techniques were used to fit a lot into a relatively small area. A series of curved walls were created to enhance the feeling of space and light. The walls alos doubled as storage vessells and were inclusive of desks, book shelves etc.
