The building belongs to the City of Yarra's heritage overlay. Subsequent to a previous planning permit to construct two dwelling units within this structure, our clients purchased this property with the goal to construct a private home for a couple. Our brief was to maximise the potential of living spaces within the existing building envelope and create a private dwelling. We also undertook to acknowledge the historical character of the existing structure and to
incorporate it as the shell for a contemporary installation. The result is largely an internal fitout and expression of plywood joinery units that sit within and dissect larger spaces, externally a cantilevered metal clad wall, private from the street, forms one wall of the external courtyard. The completed building comprises 2 large bedrooms, one of which forms a study and a bathroom with no windows but a 4 metre high skylight above the shower at first floor with open plan living spaces at ground floor. The ground floor living area extends onto a south facing private courtyard where 2 cars can park on-site in addition to a north-facing roof deck.
