Japanese principles of space and interval have been explored in the design of this house and garden located on Sydney‘s northern beaches. The journey through the house has a carefully controlled sequence of views. The sequences become flexible and interchangable through the use of sliding shutters and screens, also inspired by the freedom of beachside living and the importance of the relatedness of inside and outside.
The lower level, relates to a linear outside space and this strong emphasis on horizontality gives the ground floor area a sense of calm and privacy. In contrast, the upper living level with a balcony overlooking the “White Rock“ surf break relates to the sky and both the view of the water and the pool area, giving these rooms a sense of exhilaration and openness. The house is constructed of hardwearing and sturdy surfaces including recycled blackbutt; off form concrete, stained fibre cement sheeting and hardwood ply, allowing for sandy wet feet.
