The site of Westmere House is a long narrow ribbon; its topography stands with a flat transition to the street and then descends 15m to sea level. The concept was to arrange a sequence of interior and exterior spaces along the length of the site, but to consciously avoid a 'blinkered' effect common to a narrow site facing sea view. Exterior & interior spaces alternate to encourge permeability of the space along the extended length of the site. Spatial composition is simple solid and void, however complexity is introduced to the spaces through movement across the plan and through the three-level section.
Simplicity in the material palatte allows the generous use of space to dominant the design. White cement walls and Spanish limestone floors segue from indoors to out; with no break in platform or tone, the environment is soothing. But the inky pool, sparkly limestone and pale rendered plaster never detract from the ever-present magnetism of the great outdoors.
