By combining the city's most enduring heritage landmark with the contemporary elegance of a modern tower, the historic GPO building has been flawlessly blended into a magnificent hotel in the heart of Sydney's CBD.
The Westin Sydney encompasses two distinct buildings, a new 31-level hotel and the heritage 4-level post office building and courtyard environment.
Designed by the Buchan Group, the architecture of the new tower is modern, contemporary and dynamic with the scale of facade elements, windows, arches and fenestration having been based on the scale and proportion of the GPO Building in order to create a synergy of proportion over the entire development.
At the meeting point of these two diverse architectural structures, both buildings converge within an enclosed 4-storeyed glass roofed courtyard. the new tower provides tiered galleries on two levels that overlook the courtyard and interior facade of the old post office building and the bustling public facilities (retail outlets, restaurants and bars).
Designed by Chada Siembieda, the interior of The Westin Sydney is contemporary, modern and timeless. In rising to the challenge of amalgamating the new (tower) with the old (heritage), the designers have succeeded in creating a single interior identity for the entire hotel that reflects both a corporate theme and a modern international style.
The classic styles of the 1950's, with their simplicity of form, bold shapes and scale, have been reinterpreted to a contemporary style with an international flavour. The design quality lies in the use and presentation of elegant materials, simply arranged to accent their tone, texture and patina. Furniture is modern classical and the interiors are unique.
