Pier 6/7 is an integral part of the first stage of the Walsh Bay Redevelopment, one of Australia's major urban renewal undertakings. This building is, to our knowledge, the only new purpose-built residential pier in the world. It contains 140 apartments in single and double storey configurations, residents' common areas, a gym and health club, bot moorings and car parking. Some of the challenges involved in this project were • to design the first new residential building sited over Sydney Harbour whilst respecting and responding to the context of magnificent existing 1910 timber industrial wharf structures • to achieve exceptional indoor and outdoor amenity for the apartments • to solve the technical problems associated with designing and building such a complex structure partly below water level • to achieve the high levels of environmental performance expected of such a significant project • to develop a level of detail resolution which is suitable for the luxury apartment market and at the same time be readily sustainable in such a harsh microclimate • to work within rigid approval controls administered by numerous statutory authorities Combined with the Shore Apartments and the new public waterfront concourse, this project creates an important new precinct for the people of Sydney. Pier 6/7 has already been recognised by winning 15 API, IEA, MBA, HIA and CCFA Awards during 2002 and 2003.
