This contemory extension to a victorian cottage in inner Melbourne is a fresh reinterpretation of the formal arrangement of rooms practised in the late nineteenth century. Working to a subtle rectalinear grid, BBP Architects has slotted together an elegant arrangement of rooms and spaces within a restricted footprint defined by the proportions of the existing house and the narrow site.
Starting with the idea of a series of cubes, and stretching and inetrlocking the shapes to suit the site and the brief, BBP Architects has devised an elegantand logical solution to the problem of renovating in a restrictive inner city location where the footprint and orientation is already given. To borrow a phrase from the French writer Andre Breton, these spaces operate like "communicating vessels' through which light and life can pass with ease.
