PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY PAUL GOSNEY

Dubbed the Water House, the owner was "committed to doing an artistic bit of work", and has carried out the renovation over a long period of time with great attention to detail in the building and in the development of ideas. Its was important during this process to keep in mind that the finished renovation remain a seamless product. "The four storey home is built around a glass box hanging in the middle of space. During the day it floods the house with natural light, saving power. At night it throws out light.
The natural light adds to thbe comfort of thoseliving in the house and also allows for the sort of play with light you might find in painting.
The ground plan allows for good cross-ventilation because it is gutted terrace. In fact, the whole thing resembles an inverted T, where the light well and stairs form the downstroke and the major axis of the site the crossbar. There's a very Spanish feel to the concept with the water feature and open court, in this case glass-covered, sitting at the centre of the house. The basement is a completely new section of the building and allows all the services and associated technologies to sit out ofsight and not take up valuable space else where.
