This project involved the complete re-configuration of a 2 level 1940's masonary house built on a steep south-facing bushland site in Castlecrag. The existing house had no sense of entry, no considered movement sequence, no orientation to the north and no considered connection to distant views and potential vistas.
The entry sequence of the new house begins at the upper level driveway, with stairs leading down to a north facing courtyard. The courtyard is bordered by the living entry space and the kitchen as well as the roff bridge link to the roof terrace.
The main living areas and balconies, study bathroom and main bedroom are located on this level. Other bedrooms are below and the roof terrace is above.
Re-ordering the previous contorted floor plan and the relocation of the stairs to the south allowed for a complete rationalisation of the living areas. These now present as a series of interconnected volumes both internal and external with considered openings to distant views and the treetops.
The scheme was a direct response to the parameters of a difficult site and the desires of the owners to have a simple robust house as well as the architects desire o carefully connect to framed views while providing a variety of places from which to enjoy them.
