Flying in the face of peer convention, architects Stephen O'Connor and Annick Houle have blown off the big brag in their new South Melbourne home and just done "family". That is, they disconnected the redesign of a single-storey, Victorian terrace from a client portfolio filled with fabulous lives and simply put their interior world in the service of sanity and four-year-old twins. "No, the two aren't mutually exclusive", assures Houle, who has managed to blanket the complexity of the couple's alterations and additions in the same grey-tinged colour of clouds frozen in strata formation on living-room walls by photographer Trevor Mein. "This was on a small site and while we very much approach most projects from the outside in, I think in these small, interstitial situations.." she suddenly switches from archi-speak to the matter-of-fact musings of a working mother, "it was our home, so we just thought about it more from the inside, I mean, how we occupy the space and how it helps us shut out the stresses of the everyday."
