Architect's statement
Situated on Marine Parade, the new three level house overlooks Port Phillip Bay and its mosaic of activity.
The project required the demolition of an existing two storey brick residence to make way for the new three level dwelling. To respond to council’s requirement for a pitched roof the inverted pitch was adopted providing an awning to the western façade.
A tonal grading system has been employed and applied to the internal finishes moving up through the house from dark to light. Each level adopts a distinct purpose from guest accommodation on the ground floor, to living with sleeping at the top.
Upon entering the house at ground, a linear light well guides the passage to a circular steel stair. The staircase slices through the three levels as a strong sculptural element, carving out a detailed timber lined internal core. At each level the timber lining folds out enveloping the interior.
Living areas and bedrooms are located toward the front of the house to take advantage of the spectacular views across the bay and towards the Melbourne docks.
The result is an assuming insertion that internally provides a comfortable and engaging character.
