Building designer Michael Sasso had work done on a previous residence with the owners of this stunning Vaucluse home. In contrast to this spectacular contemporary style, their
former home was a large Victorian-style residence In the leafy area of Beecroft In Sydney's north-west. "As designers, the most difficult hurdle for us to overcome was Ignoring
the Intimate knowledge of the clients' lifestyle and aesthetic requirements for their previous traditional-style residence and design a new home which was restricted In area and diametrically opposed to their old home In
character and features," says Michael.
The site's restrictions were also a problem as the land had been previously subdivided to accommodate a dual-occupancy building which, under the zoning at subdivision, would have permitted a larger floor area to be built. Because the zoning had been changed at state level, the local council was more than reasonable and allowed some concession to their normally stringent requirements to accommodate the clients. The site was purchased primarily for the view of Sydney Harbour and also because It faced west, and this completely dictated the design and
layout. Because of the small site and the slight fall towards the road, the garages were placed partly below ground level with Internal access.
The bedrooms on the second level lead directly to a balcony, as do the living areas on the third floor which flow out to extensive patios for entertaining and maximising the beautiful harbour panorama. To protect these patios from the elements, the roof covers much of the area but an opening/closing 'vergola' Is
Included to allow the sun to penetrate In winter. Solar-efficient glazing Is used
on all windows and doors facing west to achieve a comfortable living environment. Window treatments In the bathroom and northern end of the deck Incorporate translucent louvres by Pilkington, which allow privacy screening along with light and ventilation flow, A large family/entertaining room on the ground floor, easily accessible

as a feature and reminiscent of a Tuscan Villa. It runs the length of the rear boundary.
The slick and polished interior design was undertaken by Urban Moo Interiors. All finishes were chosen to enhance the contemporary, open-plan design: the entry floor Is Jalsalmer limestone from Bisanna; kitchen cupboards are clad In Pommele Sapele veneer from Briggs Veneers, with the benchtops In 10mm-thlck honed slate by Mlntaro Slate Quarries: taps
by Vola from dedece feature throughout the kitchen and bathrooms, with bathroom benchtops In Carrara marble; other cabinetry throughout the house Is also Pommele Sapele, used for Its classic appeal, richness and
colour to give the feeling of luxury. The living area features B&B Italla sofas, wall units and Alavola dining table with upholstered Melandra
