In the old building's place is a modern home of remarkable qualities, a sublime harmony of exterior and interior design. Its clean, modern lines are created by an unusual mix of synthetic and organic materials - anthracite, concrete, high-gloss white joinery, limed American oak joinery and mirrors in bath restrained and overblown proportions. Each element rests peacefully with the other within an expansive space. The ground floor is one open room, floating from the front entry through to the limestone rear terrace. The design is a collaboration between owners Marcus and Sarah Freeman, architect Robert Mills and Hassell interior designer Scott Walker.
At the heart of the home is a stair case, a pivotal element of the architect's projects: The steps are cast in anthracite – the form of the staircase is comparable to a nautilus shell, whose internal spiral is known for its perfect mathematical ratio. The staircase ascends to a circular skylight, feeding sun light to an open-plan first floor.
Within this lofty space, a strong horizontal line is created with the use of a 'floating' plinth that runs from the front of the living room to the rear glass wall. A shelf, fireplace, kitchen joinery and external cupboards (even a dog's kennel is incorporated at the back) have been crafted from the plinth. "The plinth allows the eye to flow through space without interruptions.”
The designer minimizes the palette of materials in pursuit of architectural purity. The austerity of the concrete floor blends in with anthracite - its organic sister. The material has been applied on the plinth section as well as the steps of the stair case. The sharp angularity of the concrete facade and zinc awning blades invoke a clear modernist aesthetic. Walls throughout the building are rendered in white plasterboard, creating a mute yet meditative effect.
Frameless glass windows seamlessly link the interior to the same level outside, the concept of continuity is also enhanced by a 13.5m pool running the length of the north wall.
