PROJECTS IN MELBOURNE

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANNON MCGRATH

Ross Street is the ultimate in contemporary inner-city living: a luxury home and style accessory in one. It’s a place where the ambitious can thrive, whether playing sharp-suited host and mixologist or dressed down to unwind.

The custom spiral staircase, chrome clad columns and frameless windows turn this glass, zinc and concrete building into an artwork that transcends its suburban environment and radiates success.

Having established a design direction a collaborative process was undertaken to review relevant aspects of the architecture, with the goal to create a fully integrated house from the inside out. The owners sought to distinguish their house as an urban model within the leafy surrounding context of Melbourne’s Toorak.

The design expresses a spatial simplicity, in which rooms are interconnected and their functions amplified. Sculptural gestures, such as the central spiral staircase and over sized joinery units, heighten both the scale and a dynamic lifestyle. In essence, this project is a pure exploration in an uncompromising minimalist language.

The new timber, zinc and concrete Ross Street home is a study in surprise. The sharp angularity of the concrete façade and zinc awning blades invoke a clean modernist aesthetic.
