Our desire was to respond to the tiny site and small budget with an equally concise but emotionally rich solution.
An original timber framed and (badly rusted) sheet metal clad east wall was replaced with a new form. As with the original east wall, this new form is lightweight with tenuous connections to the three existing brick boundary walls.
It is also timber framed and clad with sheet metal, but instead of being a flat wall, it is a 3 dimentional tower-box inserted into the embrace of the original brick shell. It is tightly packed vertically, and is very small in floor area - housing the intimate functions of ablutions and sleep. More exuberant activities occur in the remainder of the two original volumes.
Circulation occurs in the gaps between the old and new, with the staircase cutting vertical shafts between them. As you spiral up through the building, their relationship is exposed, and at the same time, progressively more natural light enters while views out increase.
The experience culminates in arrival at an almost precarious projecting balcony which is fully exposed to the street and the landscape of Richmond.
