Architect's Statement
QIC's new headquarters was inspired by their 'village of boutiques' structure which is one of their main points of differentiation in the market. The final design solutions emphasise the importance of allowing the unique characters of these 'boutiques' to be expressed by allowing the structure and diversity of the organisation to be represented physcially through the space.
The physical manifestation of the 'village' is through built team home bases or teepees that use demountable partitioning to allow different groups to customise space to suit their needs. The team teepee concept allows a great degree of customisation to occur in an other wise generic olan, which ultimately supports flexibility.
For QIC the workplace offered a significant opportunity to strengthen QIC's relationships with their clients. High quality amenity spaces send a message to visitors of QIC's commitment to thier clients and their people.
In order to continually innovate and create linkages across and between business units and sites, the design of the built environment supports collaboration both physically, though an interconnecting stair that connects the floors and informal brainstorming areas, formed from the residual space between teepees and the perimeter walls. When a physical separation is not required, work groups have positioned themselves around teepees rather than between them to allow greater cross team interaction.
Colour and material selections, as well as artworks, have a 'Queensland' feel. The use of recycled wood and natural materials conveys a casual yet professional image that represents QIC. Finally, QC's new workplace represents and supports the values of the organisation as a whole including innovation, excellence, teamwork, integrity and conviction.
