The house turns its back on its surroundings and looks inwards. To enter the house is to depart from the Brisbane suburb which it is in. Hence it is described as a miniature gated suburb, complete with precincts with differing function and character.
A 1960's fibro house was half kept for the renovation, which was only on a small block of land of only some 400 sq mtrs.
The traditional suburban relationship of a house surrounded by spare space has been reversed with this extension to a typical local bungalow. The fabric of the building is drawn to the legal extremities of the site and external space is captured and fashioned similarly to the elements of the building itself. This enables experimental and spatial qualities to be emphasized rather than treat the house as an object in the round. The dominant element in the streetscape is the open portal of the outdoor room (the public space of the house), which maintains the private site's porosity to the public realm. The enclosing walls are reactive to the changing light conditions and provide the atmosphere and outlook for a site without memorable features.
