Architect's statement:
This project has created a new benchmark in our own design practice - that of an ideal situation where the client brief and the intentions and strengths of Nexus Desigs and the architects Dimitty Andersen perfectly, allowing for an extremely rewarding design process and intensely satisfying end result. Our client's life revolves around art. It isn't an add-on, an indulgence or a hobby, it is an absolutely fundamental part of their life, and therefore was also at the forefront of our thinking at all times.
Here we had the luxury of a brief that was intensely personal and unambiguous in its intention. It was to be a house to suit the client, and the client alone. Because the client is confident, warm, passionate and single minded in their enjoyment of contemporary Australian art, our philosophy was for the house to be a clear reflection of this. What sounds like a potentially exclusive, inflexible brief actually resulted in a house that is inclusive and welcoming. No one wants to leave. The house works equally well for the client on their own or for the full sprectrum of family and friends - babies and grandchildren included. Developing and detailing the elements of the design in order to achieve a seamless, intergrated and complementary interior was paramount. Joinery was deliberately kept extremely simple, with no distracting hardware visible. We worked collaboratively with Dimitty Andersen Architects, whose strong, simple extension to the North and beautiful architectural detailing throughout create a feeling of the house being calm and effortless, the perfect foil for the strength of the furniture and artwork.
