This project sits in position atop the masonary of a 5 storey warehouse. Viewed from a distance the alterations and additions to the Project A apartment building, cant help but provoke iconic interpretations.
The architects have approached this project by not using chic minimalism or discrete inner city contextualism.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of this project is its visibility - especially as the architects were able to only influence a part of the building (ie roof aprtment structure).
The choice of zinc-cladding gives the structure a scale-like texture and an animated presence, and thereby providing the roof top with a striking prescence.
Beneath the protective skin, the interior has lofty spaces. The living rooms are housed within a tall linear bending space, formed by a major interior wall, running parallel to the curvature of the exterior zinc-clad wall.
The living areas have a series of carefully composed openings that diffuse light from a hidden skylight and allow the living rooms several entry points.
Placed at the hinge point between the southern exterior wall and the curved interior wall, the staircase capitalises on this curvature to orchestrate a delay in revealing the city beyond.
What is compelling about this penthouse addition is that it is not singularly about producing iconic form or making an outdoor room. The true value of the addition is in the reciprocity of the spectacle that it offers - the mannerin which it shapes a way of viewing and understanding the city, and in turn offers a shape to be seen .
