The clients on this project are a young professional couple with two children. Their brief for the project was to create a home in which they could entertain in different modes and yet still maintain a family home suitable for children. The client had an admiration for Japanese influenced design and asked for this style to be incorporated into the scheme.
The existing interior was a hotchpotch of spaces with too many internal walls and an inconsistent use of material and finishes. Consequently the living areas were dark and disjointed with no 'flow' between the spaces. The client wanted to start with a clean state and open up the entire ground floor incorporating kitchen, family room, living room, dining room, terrace, internal courtyard, entry and small bathroom,
Our approach was to initially resolve the layout of the ground floor, attempting to open up the rooms into functional spaces. The internal courtyard provides a pivot to the interior and aR rooms wrap around it - the courtyard is treated as an 'extension' to the dining, kitchen and living rooms ,with the dining ind living rooms opening onto it. The living, dining, kitchen and outdoor areas could then be read as a unified series of spaces, which are linked by view, materials and tight.
While avoiding a overt Japanese aesthetic we attempted to instil a sense of calm into the spaces by using a restrained palette of colours and finishes and by paying particular attention to joinery acting as screens to divide the rooms.
