This large apartment in a new development in Sydney's Potts Point was purchased off the plan by the clients. It holds one entire floor and includes indoor and outdoor areas. Accessed by lift, visitors arrive at a private entry portal in which Burley Katon Halliday created a dramatic mirrored reflective space. From there you pass through to the contrasting tranquillity of white, clean lines and minimalist joinery.
BRIEF The clients found the exterior of the building appealing. Internally, however, the developer was producing a three-bedroom family apartment. The new owners had no children and were after a pure, minimal gallery aesthetic in which, the internal areas were to be devoted to living areas, a quest bedroom, a master bedroom and a study/office area. They commissioned the designers to retain and design the space as a classic BKH project.
SOLUTION The front of the apartment facing the street was originally devoted to two bedrooms and a family room. This was replanned as the master bedroom with dressing room and ensuite bathroom, a quest bedroom and separate bathroom. The kitchen and long entrance hall run perpendicular to this axis and take visitors through to this axis and take visitors through to the living areas running along the rear axis of the unit. What was the bedroom was given over to internal living space and a study/office, at the other end of this open plan area is lounge and informal dining.
A second major design redirection was to bring into focus the lap pool. It had suffered the ignominy, in the initial planning, of being virtually hidden. BKH enlarged existing windows looking toward the pool and created new windows either side of the new windows either side of the new fireplace view.
