The Parklands Residence, is a modern townhouse overlooking Adelaide's Parklands. Set in a local heritage area, the street facade explores the reinterpretation of a Grand Terrace house whilst asserting rational yet sympathetic proportions to its surrounds. Through careful planning and use of solid and void, the residence utilises northern light, scale and different transition paths to configure its relationship to site and context. The house features low maintenance materials and incorporates smart power management systems to control all internal and external services. The building is composed of three parts - first the private formal spaces, second the large central living volume, linked at both eastern and western ends by a cantilevered walkway and third the rear garaging and guest wing.
By using uncomplicated geometries and emphasising transperancy and restraint the architects have produced a dwelling that responds o sensitively to its heritage context without recourse to outmoded architectural motifs.
A series of rectilinear solids and cuts delineate the living spaces, while smooth planes and transarent panels create visual links between living zones.
The beauty of the building , both inside and outside, resides in the many effects created by natural and artifical light sources. They highlight edge details and create shadowline effects that are in constant flux depending upon the time od day nad season.
Outside the result is a controlled , chiselled façade on which wide eaves cast dark crisp shadows. Inside celestory full-length and vertical slot windows introduce a dynamic play of light which is enhanced by a neutral colour palette and sleek furnishings.
The building comprises 3 parts
a) formal private spaces
b) large central living volume with a cantilevered walkway overhead
c) rear garaging and guests wing.
