PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SIMON KENNY

Project architect Will Fung perserves the clean-lined, open-hearted, pared-back and monochrome structure while incarnating a new soul to the existing architecture.

The new interpretation salvages three sides of the two-storey 'concrete bunker', keeping its roof, upstairs bathroom, staircase and timber floor. The fourth wall of the building - the front facade facing due east to the ocean - has been opened up and a new dark-stained, timber-clad, steel framed wing has been added. Underneath has been excavated to provide a guest room.

Sitting on a precipitous slope, high above the sea, the house is entered on the top floor, through a new opening cut into the blockwork front wall. Directly in front on thhis level is the master bedroom, contained in the new wing jutting out the front left of the orginal structure, together with a bathroom (orginal 1950s and re-decorated), to the immediate left of the front door, and two additional bedrooms, to the right.

Descending a flight of stairs, keeping the original 1950s steel balustrading, is the living space. Ideally, the designers would prefer the living and sleeping zones to alternate, unfortunately, working within the orginal scheme proved the most cost-effective solution for the family. Also, the house is highed elevated that the panoramic views are too much to be compromised. The living area is open plan and spills onto a new balcony, cantileverd at the front of the new wing. A gallery kitchen with blonde joinery and a light green colourback glass splashback lines the opposite wall. In the ceiling above the living space, Fung has chosen to expose the upstairs floor joists with stained dark colour to echo the beach's essence. A new steel beam supporting the joists is painted in vivid yellow. From the living space a new flight of stairs leads down to a guest bedroom excavated from what used to be an undercroft. The space doubles as a study and a bed folds out of a wardrobe.

At ground level, the house opens to a timber terrace, all three decks (downstairs, living space and entrance) offer comfortable outdoor spaces depending on the time of the year and prevailing breezes.
