They didn't want to be too groovy," says Oil's Managing Director Sally Walsh, "or have design for design's sake. Everything had to be functional as well as aesthetic, with a high level of flexibility."
The company's offices, a 490 square metre space in a 100-year-old warehouse, were designed on a tight budget by interior designer, furniture designer and artist Mark Marin. The cool white open spaces, warmed by Shaw / lnvicta carpeting in a grey brown, are calm and soothing, with workspaces at long tables around the perimeter, a central break-out area with library and comfortable seating, eat-in kitchen and simple, functional meeting room.
7he fit-out is not high glamour as is more usual in advertising", says Marin. "in fact, it's kind of the antithesis. It's a simple, honest, open fit-out that meets a comfortable grey zone between a domestic and commercial environment: it doesn't feel like a living room but it doesn't feel like a corporate, slick office either."
To keep within budget, Marin designed the reception desk and ottomans, tables, coffee tables and a sofa, thereby avoiding retail mark ups and paying only the raw manufacturing cost. "It is possible to create a commercial interior on a low budget without resorting to using cheap copies of good furniture designs, It takes more effort to achieve an acceptable result, but with ingenuity, low budget fit-outs can still maintain their integrity." The final cost came in at $120,000 including the building works, services, telephone system and design fees, plus a further $65,000 contribution from the landlord for carpet, lighting and basic electrical costs.
