PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARRIN REES

This is the home of innovative Indian food in Sydney. For more than 15 years, owner Basil Daneill has served dishes that take their inspiration from across the subcontinent, and crafted to use the best of Sydney produce and its ever-changing tastebuds.

A favourite for 14 years, Oh! Calcutta! has established itself as a Sydney icon. The only Indian restaurant in Sydney to receive a prestigious Chef's Hat in The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, Oh! Calcutta! also has won the SMH's Best Indian Restaurant category for the past nine years, including the recently released 2003 edition. Owner, Basil Daniell (pictured), works the stylishly designed space by Iain Halliday with ease. This busy and vibrant restaurant provides an intriguing insight into the contemporary cooking styles of the subcontinent with an emphasis on the lesser known and more interesting dishes from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The name Oh! Calcutta!
Was chosen for a number of reasons.

Owner Basil Daniell wanted the restaurant to be different, the name had to break away from the usual cliché-d mould.

He liked the theatricality of using the name of the 1970s musical Oh! Calcutta! (The musical's name later evolved into French slang roughly translated as "what a delightful backside you have" Basil's cheeky nod to the Darlinghurst location.)

Oh! Calcutta! Was recently renovated, its fourth facelift in the 13 years since it opened.

"It's very important to update our look," says Basil who chose interior designer Iain Halliday of Burley Katon Halliday, renowned for his contemporary designs and makeovers such as Sydney restaurants, Salt, The Summit and Sailors' Thai.

"We wanted a sleek, modern look that complemented the food without being in your face Indian," he says.

Walls have been repainted in subtle spice colours, the screens a replica of those seen in mosques and the carpet has a rich Mogul pattern, making Oh!Calcutta! A restaurant where Moorish meets more-ish.

A recent makeover by design guru Iain Halliday, of Burley Katon Halliday, has created a glamorous space for the new millennium.

Warm spice colours, terrazzo joinery and stunning Islamic screening detail provide the perfect backdrop for Oh! Calcutta's fabulous food.
