The project is located along the foreshore of Gore Creek, in the tranquil residential area of Northwood. The site is steeply graded down towards Gore Creek, enjoying extensive water views to the east. To the north there is a two storey face brick residence built to 900mm of the boundary. The Clients are a family of five.
The brief called for a four bedroom house with open plan living/dining/kitchen area and a self contained nanny/granny flat. The existing house, a two storey blond brick residence with flat roof, was demolished and an off-form concrete and masonary building erected. Due to the Clients’ desire for the main house to be on one level and the physical orientation of the site and immediate features around it two main decisions were made which shaped the design: One: no windows to the north; which led to the second: Two: the house as two pavilions with a light courtyard in between. The house is split into three levels: Entry Level: the garage and entry area are the only visible structures from the street.
The entry opens up to the East alowing for framed and controlled views to the water. To the North a low clear glazed corner brings in reflected northern light from a pond while not alowing views to the neighbouring house. Main Level: this is planed as two pavilions with light courtyard between. The eastern pavilion contains the living, kitchen and dining spaces and affords the best views. To the South and separated by four steps is the master bedroom, sharing the same views. The western pavilion houses the Kids’ areas including playroom, bedrooms and bathrooms. Under the garage are the laundry and cellar. The pavilion arangement allows for openings to provide a high level of controlled natuaral cross-ventilation and the themal mass of the concrete helps keep the house at comfortable temperatures all year round. Lower Level: this has the rumpus room to the north, the nanny/granny flat and to the south the study. Below the study deck is a 20000L rain water tank which feeds all the W.C.'s and garden watering system
