PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARRIN REES

The project consists of a large (four bedroom, three bathroom) house on a small, steeply sloping, site overlooking Middle Harbour.

A binuclear planning strategy reduces the scale of the house and provides separation between formal and informal living areas and adult and child sleeping areas.

The two components of the binuclear plan explore residential planning archetypes: the linear plan (Murcutt, Elwood, etc) and the square plan(Palladio, Corbusier).

Each type has a different material and spatial expression. The linear plan consists of masonry blade walls and has an open-ended spatial expression. The square volume is clad in zinc panels and has a defined volumetric expression.

The skewed geometry of the square volume accentuates its differentiation from the linear plan, aligning it with the side boundary.

This creates the opportunity of an entry sequence consisting of a series of outdoor rooms in the ‘cleft' between the two volumes. The entry and stair are located within a glazed bridge between the two volumes at the end of the sequence.

Outdoor spaces are planned as rooms, extending the spatial sequence of the internal planning and the building to ‘inhabit' the site rather than sit upon it.
