PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY JAMIE GREY

HBO & EMTB were thrilled to be offered the challenge of meeting Nortel's request to challenge the workplace needs of the company.
A series of workshops and reviews were held to esure that the results optimally met the needs of the employees.

In today's unpredictable economic climate where the nature of an "office" is likely to change quickly, adaptability and versatility were very important considerations when planning the work spaces for the staff.

The layout of the fitout involved the creation of numerous "local neighbourhoods" An urban planning approach ws used to zone the floor in different colours and the fit-out is an analogy iof an urban landscape.

The abundance of natural light pouring onto the floor entrances allowed the colour schemes to be enhanced. Light and colour transfer throughout the office space.

Nortel Networks required a new state-of-the-art facility for its photonics division. Once the eventual site in Botany, the location of a partially complete 3 level building shell (8,000 sqm), had been chosen, a combined Architecture, Consulting and Interior Design team completed a design and construct process for the building that rendered the client`s exact specifications. The key element of the brief, delivered at short notice in July 2000, was to accommodate the ramp up of a small existing location (30-50 employees) to a high-tech research and development facility that would incorporate the flexibility necessary to support up to 700 employees on rotating shifts by the end of 2001.

This facility, completed in late January 2001, within extreme time limitations, was developed by a specialist on-site team into 3000 sqm of commercial office accommodation, 2000 sqm of manufacturing and laboratory space as well as loading and storage bays. Among the most specialised elements of the site are the laboratories for Laser and Lithographic processes, Prototype and Manufacturing development as well as Testing and Qualification. All of these conform to a high-end-industry "clean room" standard. Further, given a 24-hour operational capability, the facility also features a 1000 sqm "main street" that incorporates items such as breakout areas, recreational space, locker rooms and complete sanitary facilities, and elevates the Photonics project to the status of a corporate campus
