The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) was the unanimous choice of the 2002 Awards Jury of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter, for its most coveted prize - the Sulman Award
The jury noted that NIDA was "a project of intelligent resolve ... of memorable discovery and clearly defined priorities ... illustrating that a building of significant accomplishment need not be overdramatised".
The redevelopment of NIDA by HASSELL in association with Peter Armstrong Architecture, includes a new theatre complex, rehearsal rooms, workshops and library as an extension to the existing teaching facilities in Kensington.
Stage II of the NIDA Building provides: -
A 700 seat replacement for the Parade Theatre
A 120 seat Directors Theatre
Sound Stage and Control Rooms
A Multimedia Studio
A New Library
A large Foyer/Entertainment area
The design process has been a long and close collaboration between the architects and the NIDA staff. This will result in a building that will not only have a striking appearance, but will be theatrically effective and fulfill all its intended functions.
