The new office for Munich Reinsurance is located on the 36th floor of the former BHP House built in 1969 and now on the Victorian Heritage Register. The building provides expansive views over Melbourne, and the workplace design sought to maintain this transparency from every point on the floor. The reception is designed as a public gallery space that creates dramatic view corridors through meeting spaces at each end and provides a direct view out to the West. Offices and workstations are located inboard where it is possible to free the perimeter for communal zones and to maximise natural light.
The planning reinforces the concept of teamwork and the importance of communication by planning the semi-enclosed offices around informal lounge style meeting areas. These breakout spaces also provide touchdown desks for interstate and international staff visitors. In recognition of the client's long standing commitment to the integration of artwork within the workplace, the entry gallery includes a panelled installation for its full length.
The building has clear spanning windows from floor to ceiling on all three sides of the tenancy providing expansive views over Melbourne. With this base, the office concept maintained a transparency out to the views from every point on the floor.
