PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

The original building was a typical example of early 20th century Federation period architecture

Interestingly Council was more concerned with preserving the Murcutt design alterations than the other internal design features.

Varaday's new design - a series of modifications exploring kinetic architecture and sculpturally intersected elements - was intended to respect Murcutts previous work

The planning is simple and pragmatic with the arrangement of the spaces and deployment of glass allow the bedroom, courtyard and en-suite bathroom to all borrow space from each other , thereby giving a feeling of expansive, dramatic space

in 1969, architect glenn murcutt designed an alteration/addition to the rear ground floor of this suburban bungalow to become his own house and first project. a miesian inspired work, it removed all internal walls channeling the focus of attention to the garden outside.

the new owners' desire was to revitalise the ground floor with new bedroom, bathroom and kitchen designs, and to add a new private parents bedroom suite above.

the first floor addition takes its initial cues from the murcutt approach, by also channeling the view to the garden at the rear. the notion of the view is then further explored in this scheme through the glazed layering of the relatively small spaces. the parents bedroom suite contains a study, bedroom and bathroom, a courtyard between the two, and a dressing room that runs along the full length of the northern side. windows are positioned above 2200mm high allowing sun, natural light, and views to all spaces while ensuring complete privacy from close neighbours. the study is deliberately private with the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired ring of highlight windows, focusing attention on the work at the desk.

glass is the main material in the new extension. it is used as a transparent, translucent and solid material – with its transparency and reflectivity taken full advantage of. the perception of all spaces is increased through the use of glass. the bathroom is no longer only 1500mm wide because it looks through the layers of glass of the courtyard and the bedroom to the trees beyond. the bedroom's single 3600mm wide glazed sliding door creates an illusion of sleeping in the canopy of the trees. a glass floor in the courtyard also filters natural light to the ground floor.
