Architect's Statement
Located on Sydney Harbour’s northern shore on top of a high sandstone cliff, the building commands panoramic views toward the harbour bridge and city skyline in the distance with an amusement park below.
The building has been designed to take advantage of these natural features while also providing sun protection to reduce solar gain from the east and west with carefully designed vertical blades. There are five floors of offices, a mezzanine and two carparking levels.
Harry Seidler and Associates have occupied the top floors for 37 years. They are unchanged with the open planning, loose furniture, desks and artwork as originally designed. The office space is column free on all floors and lends itself to open planning with exposed precast concrete beams spanning 11.3 m. integrated with exposed air conditioning ducts containing lighting.
During 2010 the building’s setting will be enhanced when a park, to the south, will be established. Its design, prepared by Seidler’s office, will capture the forms of number 2 Glen St and Seidler’s other adjoining existing buildings. The materials selected and a prominent sculpture will give the building an appropriate forecourt to enhance the building’s setting and provide a fitting memorial to Harry Seidler.
