The design of this project has been totally defined by the parameters imposed by its site and the Council controls that apply to it.

The immediate context is one of typical large suburban houses of mixed style, vintage, and architectural merit. There is no uniformity in terms of streetscape and no attempt has been made to blend this house into its context.

The site has dramatic views out over Middle Harbour from Bradleys Head in the east, Manly, Clontarf and the Spit Bridge in the north. The four large gum trees on the site are exceptionally important and the location of the house was manipulated to ensure the retention of all of these trees. There was one Council imposed consent condition that required the street elevation and front fence to be composed predominantly of stone, to in their opinion relate to the context of masonry building forms in the area. Hence the stone cladding, but the vertical stack bond pattern of the stone tiles make it clear that the material is not being used structurally.
