Even with the best intentions, it's not always possible to alter an older house to suit modern lifestyles. The inherent character of many traditional villas may make them visually appealing, but renovation can sometimes be a false economy.
Such was the case with this property. While the owner thought initially in terms of refurbishment, he says it soon became clear it was not an economical option. An alternative plan, conceived by architect Sarah Shand, director of Issenbel.com, saw a new house built on the footprint of the older one. Local council constraints also dictated that the design of the new exterior should result in a look similar to that of the old house.
