PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY DEAN WILMOT-LAMARCHE

It was Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van de Rohe who first coined the phrase "less is more". It's a concept that has been adopted by countless designers and homeowners to create clutter-free, stream-lined living environments.

The owners of the spacious inner-city apartment featured on these pages wanted a total change from their former residence, a large, traditional home.

They commissioned designer Andrew Parr from SJB Interior Design to create a décor for the fifth-floor apartment that would be sleek and contemporary, with an emphasis on open living and entertaining areas.

The resulting design combines classic 1950s elements and Mies van der Rohe influences with a modern, understated look.

To maximize light and views toward the city and water, the apartment is built like a large glass pavilion, with full-height windows wrapping around the open-plan living and dining area.

This glazing also helps to accentuate the feeling of space that the owners wanted. The use of simple, geometrical pieces of furniture further adds to the uncluttered appearance of the living area.

"In terms of colour, the owners asked for a modern, neutral palette, with bolder accents in the furnishings," says Parr.

The result is a calming, unobtrusive living environment that incorporates a sense of spaciousness and doesn't detract from the view. Rich timber floorboards add warmth to the room, while texture and lustre are introduced in the form of a dark-grey handmade silk and wool rug.

For the kitchen- the owners wanted a seamless clean look. This was achieved through a mix of sleek materials, including marble benchtops, white lacquered cabinetry, stainless steel applances and two glass-fronted bar fridges.

A feel of hotel luxury characterizes the master bedroom and ensuite. Upholstered silk panels run from floor to ceiling on the wall behind the bed.

In the bathroom, Moonlight Calacatta marble is used for the vanity top and bath surround, with
beige Alpolic aluminium panels creating a seamless wall finish.
