PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY WALTER GLOVER

Art spills from walls, tables, floors, and hangs from the ceiling. Artists whose first exhibition works reside here are now celebrated names.

So it was important to create a space which showed the art off well.

The house was designed expressly to house a vast and impressive collection of works and also to accommodate the milinery studio - where the art of hats finds full and glorious expression.
The house was built to include lots of wall space

The building is a federation cottage sitting on a corner block, preserving the streetscape.
Stretched out behind it is an addition , like a cubist composition.

Stylist James Gordon was consulted on colours and together with Chris dveloped a subtle colour pallette for the house - thereby not conflicting with the artwork colour vibrancies .

Inside the transition from old to new is undetectable.

The gallery is on two levels and arranged around an internal courtyard. The gallery section is composed of a number of intersecting volumes held together by a double-height central spine.

Externally, each of the volumes is a different colour. Internally the colour scheme is muted allowing the artworks to be displayed to best effect. At the north end of the spine is a glazed opening that challenges the perceived notion of a window.
