PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARRIN REES

Formerly wharves 9 & 10 at Sydney's Darling Harbour, King Street Wharf is located on the citys western CBD front.

King Street Wharf is a major inner city residential, retail and tourist/transport hub.

It was designed by Cox Richardson, and developed in the Sydney docklands area on reclaimed land in Sydney, which aims to revitalise a significant part of the western foreshore of the CBD.

As a mixed use development, it contains significant retail and tourist facilities along the waterfront promenade, with 40 low rise apartments with two major residential sites behind. The first of these consists of 300 apartments in two towers stepping up to 14 levels, and the other a proposed hotel or 230 serviced apartments.

King Street Wharf is designed to actively engage with its environment. It embraces maritime activity by providing berthing for all sizes of craft, tightly integrating these with the cruise and small craft terminal, small offices, retailing and food outlets lined along promenades, boardwalks and arcades. Architecturally the site encourages public interaction through light and transparent facades, accentuated by a maritime metaphor expressed in warm, raw industrial materials of stone, steel and timber.

The redevelopment is occurring in a way that balances cultural and commercial values, with new layers being added to the old in a sensitive and permeable way.

Projects such as King Street Wharf on the west edge of Sydney's Central Business District have rejuvenated both the city and harbour edge, creating an exciting residential mixed-use environment. The apartment environments offer a space of light filled simplicity that is bound to the spectacular harbour location. The apartment environments also offer spaces that are spatially flexible and visually enlarged through living areas that extend into dining areas, kitchens that are integrated and streamlined, to encourage interaction between preparation and living zones.
