The design is namely a direct solution to the problems of the site, to provide an outlook where previously there was none, to provide indoor and outdoor spaces, to deal in a fluent way with the awkward level changes of the lot, to rationalise car access and parking, to marry in an uncomprimising way old and new , to fit in a direct and simple way with the heritage surroundings as well as to provide shelter in a private space that will refresh the mind and spirit.
The building extension is designed as a series of stepped indoor and outdoor spaces following the slope of the siteand is connected to the original building via a landscaped passage which forms a courtyard garden between old and new.
The space is sunk into the landscape with the kitchen counter tops flush with the the courtyard and pool.
Each level of the exisiting house has an outlook to the new gardens , eliminating visible roof eyesores.
Circular operable skylights through the roof garden can be rotated to adjust natural ventilation.
Architectural balance has been achieved by including nature strongly into the design.
