The views from this inner-city Melbourne penthouse are startling. From the 20th floor you get a great sweep of the city environs, the Shrine of Remembrance, and an extensive elegant green tapestry of public gardens. At night, the lights of the suburban districts dance and flicker away to the horizon.
But it's beauty within that was the key to the refurbishment of the 200-square-metre apartment by Melbourne designer David Hicks. The owners have an extensive Australian and international art collection which needed a modernist but intriguing space in which to be displayed. The couple also regularly spends weekends in the country, says David, so they wanted the space to have the low-maintenance feel of "a city bolthole or pied-a-terre".
