HM@S Penthouse

Constructed over a vacant site previously occupied by the HMAS Lonsdale Army Barracks, the completed building now firmly anchors its urban context as the new gateway to Port Melbourne.
The challenge faced by the architects was to create a new icon building for Port Melbourne; one that was expressive of its future as a residential building, just as the neighbouring Sandridge Bay Tower was representative of its industrial past.
The development consists of a number of buildings varying in height, form and external envelope.
The main level of acommodation exists within the two prominent 18 storey buildings to the rear of the site; while lower level buildings create perimeter streetscape housing. A major retail / restaurant / commercial use building was incorporated within the development to provide for a publically active frontage to Beach Street
Twin towers with characteristic prow-like tips rise above 5 storey podiums that include this penthouse designed by Bill Krotiris of Fender Katsalidis Architects.
It's interior is dominated by a grand double height living dining area. Glazing opens onto a terrace with an uninterrupted vista of Port Elizabeth Bay. The side wall is punctuated by masonary panels and voids that conceal the home office below and master bedroom at mezzanine level above.
