Within the shell of a historic Freemantle tannery, architects JCY have created a rich dialogue between old and new.
Within the tannery site JCY have assembled a series of planes, volumes, and interlocking walls capturing space inside the shell of the old building. These planes begin as a regimented box which floats clear of the existing walls and moves away the stret towrds a complexity of fragmented pieces of space and enclosure.
As the walls fold and deflect they create strategic spaces between themselves and the existing red bricks. The architects seized this gap as the primary element of the project.
Its navigation plays a crucial role in how the occupants move around and through the scheme , always aware of their position in relation to the perimeter.
Occupying a quarter of the original warehouse envelope, the project comprises 4 commercial offices which conceal a single residence located at the rear, away from the street, to minimise noise and maximise sun penetration.
Any sense of interior is delayed by huge sliding walls of glass and solid walls that try not to touch the ground.
Degrees of enclosure are never clearly defined.
Thereis always a sense of another space beyond the one you are in.
