After 15 years in a city location the company decided to move out to the city fringe to reflect a shift in the focus of the practice. The studio covers a wide range of disciplines from graphic design and communication to architecture, industrial design, web design, and production and brand and marketing strategy.
The move corresponds to a desire to be part fo the more vibrant city fringe.
Finding the right space was important so that the office could work in a non-hierarchcial way and work together collaboratively, with a lot of brainstorming".
The space, originally a wool store, addresses 2 streets with abundant light at both ends. The ceilings are 4.2 mtrs high and the space is populated by a grid of original ironbark columns and features original distressed jarrah floorboards.
While the aim was to take advantage of the open-plan space some enclosed spaces were also required. 2 Freestanding forms were inserted into the space
1) "THE POD" an embryonic shape
2) Solid grounded CUBE which contains a series of small meeting room.
There is a counterpoint between the organic and the structured in these spaces.
Backing onto these structures are 2 public spaces for both staff and visitors. At one end is a cafe and at the other is a a library. (1 noisy , 1 quiet) but both equally important.
The cafe and kitchen are focal points for staff social and work-related interaction. Both spaces take advantage of ceiling to floor windows - providing natural light and contact with the exterior streetscape.
A series of freestanding desks is centred around freestanding spines to optimise vision across and thorugh the workspace. Everyone sits together - regardless of position or discipline - and everyone can be seen from reception.
