This project explores the ways that walls can be manipulated to introduce light from unexpected sources.
The renovations to this apartment are within a farily ordinary early 1960's concrete frame and brick clad building in sydney's Darling Point.
Originally the apartment was a straight forward 3 bedroom , 3 bathroom residence with great views of the harbour.
The client was prepared to forego a bedroom and a bathroom in order to open up more space, and combined together with the reorganisation of internal non-load bearing masonary walls a totally new floor plan was created.
Al that remained were the front door, windows, service duct risers and load bearing concrete columns.
Conceptually the apartment was stripped bare - with a new geometry formed taking its lines from the external balcony angled lines.
The new geometry converges on the centre of the apartment.
The living and dining space now occupies about half of the total apartment space.
Typically in an apartment there is little space to control the space vertically, with the floor and ceilings accepted as giivens. In this aprtment level changes are highlighted and used to advantage. Floor levels were raised to ensure good use of windows as they were not allowed to be modified by the buildings strata body corporate.
The apartment is made up of a series of a sub-plots which supply interest in the character of the complted design. Yet it is the larger scale open plan areas which bring the detail together in a coordinated manner.
