The very nature of a circle requires thinking outside the box, so when Stanic Harding Architects - were approached to redesign the interior of a circular apartment in Darling Point, they jumped at the opportunity.
The brief was simple enough:
provide individual day spaces for the apartment's two residents; a television area separate from the living room; and focus on the kitchen for the food enthusiasts.
But despite the fantastic geometry to play with ( the limited space complicated by existing plumbing penetrations) proved a challenging jigsaw puzzle.
Essentially doughnut-shaped, the single floor, three-bedroom apartment has a ring of 150 square metres of living space encircling a central core housing the elevators and fire stair access.
Perched on a hill overlooking Sydney, its vantage point provides its greatest asset, a magnificent 360-degree view of the harbour, the city and surrounding suburbs.
Inspired by its shape, challenged by its angles, and capitalising on its views, Stanic Harding set about designing a space that celebrated the circle in a fluid fashion by starting with the central core.
By cladding the cement-rendered cylinder in dark American walnut wood the architect created a feature, grounding the apartment with the panelling deep-hued vertical
veneer in contrast to the bright, distracting views of the perimeter.
Aside from acting as a skin, the wooden joining panels double as doors concealing a walk-in wardrobe, laundry, and additional storage. The doors are so scamlessly disguised that even Stanic is not certain where they are. "Nothing thrills me more than to hear one of my clients has discovered a space that they didn't know was there before."
