Achieving urban consolidation through subdivision of existing suburbs into smaller lots is a contentious issue. It is an attractive concept but there are few historic precedents.
Set of private / public multi use rooms developed from residential brief.
Configuration includes public room that addresses the public realm, and independent sub address off the secure court.
Principal space is ambiguously exterior / interior, with -
·Full adjustability of garden connection.
·Full adjustability of public interaction (emphasis on single street opening).
·Equivalence of detailing throughout.
·Light as principal atmospheric device
A strategy was developed with generic features and proportions that could be used in a number of small lot configurations, or stacked vertically to increase density. The tactic of the plan was to enclose a large portion of the site as a 'public' room; a realm containing both inside and outside spaces.
There is a generous window between this public zone of the house and the public realm of the street. This affords a variable and authentic connection between house and street. In this way, occupation and experiences contribute to the streetscape rather than the mute presentation of vernacular forms, ie. a 'walled garden' is as useful a metaphor as a 'Queenslander' (vernacular).
