Coomera River Residence
SEARCH
The site is fan shaped, narrow to the street and with a wide frontage to the Coomera River broadwater, providing a unique waterfront outlook. The existing pool, deck surround, jetty and boat ramp were all
maintained but reconstructed to provide modern finishes and materials consistent with the residence's strong aquatic location.
The existing house was a previous Home of the Year winner some time ago, displaying an Interesting plan form and some notable detailing In Its design. "Our client wanted us to expand on these characteristics In the new
residence, rather than develop the more monolithic bulldlng form often adopted on these waterfront allotments when trying to maximise a waterfront outlook," said architect Warren Webb. "The basic floor slab layout was therefore maintained, but expanded to accommodate our client's additional space requirements and a carefully articulated bullding
was developed with much attention to massing and detall, providing an exciting visual form from whatever angle the residence Is viewed.
"Construction of the project presented many complex challenges for bu1lders Jeff and Barry Baker of AlIwood Contractors Pty Ltd. However, their professional approach and co-operative attitude enabled the minute attention
to deta1l and highest quality of workmanship demanded by our client." Curved and angled Colorbond metal roofs with strutted eaves on tapered powdercoat metal battens lie over wall panels punctuated with colour, sculptural forms and glazing. Balconies featuring pillarless curved cantilevered glass balustrades topped with brushed stainless steel handralls are typical of the quality of finish and attention to detail throughout the residence. In fact, all the glazing throughout the residence, as supplied by Bradnams Windows and Doors, warrants particular mention as Itls a highlight of the design. It Includes curved glass canopies, operable
highlights, raked roof glazing, curved slumped glass curtain walling and stack back doors.
The experience of quality and interest extends inside the residence with a plan layout providing informal living areas, formal entertaining, remote i guest accommodation and a private first-fioor waterfront wing containing master suite and home office, Void spaces, feature walls of colour and shape, curved and raked ceilings and internal first-floor galleries add up to an exciting visual experience. Quality fitout, including fireplaces to lounge and master suite, marble-and-
granite-finished bathrooms, granite tops with high-gloss clear-lacquered timber cabinets to kitchen, European appliances, polished planked timber floors, timber ceilings and Integrated home theatre systems are all provided.
"A large g~age and adjoining workshop with tiled floors and operable wall opening to an outdoor landscaped court provide for our client's Interest In maintenance activities associated with his active aquatic pursuits,"
continued Warren Webb. "A bunk room has been provided over the garage for young visitors and there is a tackle room for storage of bulky game fishing equipment."
Strong connections between indoor and outdoor waterfront living/entertaining areas are achieved through the use of large sliding and stackback doors and windows, with a Teppanyaki bar as part of the kitchen,
linked to the outside. Externally, low-maintenance landscaping, bordered
broken mosaic paving, glass mosaic-tiled pool and heavy timber boardwalk-style decking all blend to enhance the waterfront outlook.
All these elements add up to a residence that Is an exciting blend, capturlng the casual architectural form of Queensland's North Coast while exhibiting crisp modern detailing and the massing of substance commensurate with Its Gold Coast waterfront location.
