PROJECTS IN TEA GARDENS

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRETT BOARDMAN

In detailing terms, 'the box' is cruder than many traditional shacks, with no internal lining, no plumbing, no electricity and no architectural fitments of any kind. The complete enclosure is lovingly crafted from timber, right down to the bi-fold door tracks, direct from an age when aluminium extrusions were yet to be invented. Timber boards are carefully book-matched everywhere, so that when closed, they run uninterrupted from top to bottom, concealing the little hatches and doors that disappear completely into the facade. Despite the singular nature of constructing from a single material, the enclosure has real depth, the layers of structure and bracing imprinting the interior with a particular complexity that is impossible to achieve with the most complex plasterboard arrangement.
