A new upper level has been added, the existing plan reconfigured and a stair punched through to unite the three levels.
The character of the house has been transformed in the process, with influences as diverse as Loos in Vienna and Prague in the Middle Head fortifications a few hundred metres from the site. The resulting form and massing is bold and direct, finished with natural white sand render. The house is entered via an off-form concrete bridge, which connects the street to the new upper level. The original front yard and pathways have been changed into a private sculpture garden. Internally the rooms are light and spacious, providing an appropriate setting for the clients' collection of paintings, furniture, art and sculpture, while at the same time providing a comfortable and informal environment for living and working.
The new top floor has extensive glazing and balcony opening out to spectacular views over Balmoral Beach and Middle Harbour. The north and west facing glass is protected by motorised external blinds and substantial roof overhang.
