The Australian knitting Mills building is one of a small group of significant brick warehouses located at the bottom of Melbournesrichmond Hill. Formerly housing a range of textile related industries, it is typical of the precincts reinvention of redundant commercial space into residential apartments and home offices.
The apartment located on the top floor is unique to the apartments in the complex due to its inclusion of a higher bridge structure which spans the laneway below.
The apartment consists of 2 distinct volumes
- existing warehouse space and the extension.
On arrival to the apartment the visitor is confronted by a clean neutral interior fit-out that serves to draw attention to the features of the original warehouse space.
Winding up through the 4 levels the viewer is distractedf from the spatial compression of the tight space by unfolding dramatic views. The experience climaxes at roof level where there is the reward for effort of panoramas of Melbourne.
