PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY BART MAIORANA

In this interior design commission, Bligh Voller Nield were asked to assist Stephen Collins Design in changing the client's conservative image and make the Clemenger office environment a true reflection of the agency as a creative "industry" in itself.

This perception is generated from the first moments visitors experience on arriving at the Reception through the inclusion in that space of a central café ¯ meeting space for staff and clients alike and through the exposure of the creative teams in 'caravans'. In order to enhance the teamwork and communication necessary in a creatively-driven agency, the design of the office space provides a new stair with open voids connecting the three floors and the enclosed office environment has been restructured to a more open plan and informal environment.

Before the fire, the advertising agency was cramped and there was a lack of continuity - hindering ease of interaction and communication thorughout the space.

The fire acted as a catalyst for change within the organisation - which were beginning to emerge within management at the time anyway
In the pre fire days the company took up 4 floors of the building. During the revamp they squeezed into the top 2 levels only.

The phoenix from the flame is a series of spaces filled with colour, tactile materials, varying ceiling heights, interlinking elements and lots of movement.

The interior fitout for Clemenger BBDO is most clearly described as a variation on adaptive reuse. The existing building, an example of late 80's 'glass box' architecture, provided the external envelope for the insertion of a dynamic new workspace with very different spacial and social needs to those of traditional office environments.

A fire which destroyed level 3 of the Clemenger BBDO office precipitated the change. The fire exposed the potential of the building shell.
With the removal of all internal partitions, suspended ceilings and services, the space exhibited the raw warehouse qualities that the client desired in order to convey an image of a creative and transparent agency. The design of the new offices sought to retain these qualities and in so doing maximise the penetration of natural light and access to the view without compromising the Agency's functional requirements. The use of the building did not change however the approach taken by both client and design team to achieve an adapted working environment which belies the corporate exterior of the building and is unconstrained by the traditional architectural language of 'modern' office design.

The completed project covered three floors with a total area of 2100 sq.m, built in stages whilst the Agency was in occupation.
